Canada Express Entry Program

Immigrate to Canada through Express Entry

Express Entry is the primary system used by the Canadian government to manage applications for permanent residence under key federal economic immigration programs. It is designed to select skilled workers based on their ability to contribute to Canada’s labour market and economy.

Processing Time for Express Entry

An Express Entry profile remains valid for up to one year from the date of submission. Candidates who receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence can generally expect their application to be processed within approximately six months. Processing times are calculated from the date a complete permanent residence application is received and conclude once a final decision is issued. If a candidate does not receive an ITA within the one-year validity period, they may submit a new profile, provided they continue to meet the eligibility requirements.

Backgrounds of Express Entry Applicants

Canada welcomes skilled workers from over 100 countries each year through the Express Entry system. Selection is not based on nationality; rather, candidates are assessed according to their capacity to successfully integrate into the Canadian labour market.

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) evaluates applicants based on factors such as age, education, language proficiency, skilled work experience, and other human capital attributes. This merit-based system allows Canada to attract professionals from diverse occupational and cultural backgrounds. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) publishes annual reports outlining demographic and occupational trends among Express Entry immigrants.

Eligibility for Express Entry

Eligibility for Express Entry depends on meeting the criteria of one of the federal immigration programs managed under the system. Applicants who are currently ineligible should first identify the specific requirements they do not meet. For example, under the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), candidates must satisfy minimum standards related to work experience, education, and language proficiency. Addressing these gaps is often the first step toward qualification.

Another pathway is through Canadian education and employment. To qualify under the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), applicants must have at least one year of eligible Canadian work experience within the past three years and meet the required language standards. Studying in Canada and subsequently gaining skilled work experience can enhance eligibility and increase CRS points, as Canadian education and employment are highly valued within the ranking system.

Applicants who do not qualify under Express Entry may explore alternative pathways, as Canada offers numerous skilled worker immigration programs at both federal and provincial levels.
