Skilled Independent Visa

Australia Skilled Visa Streams

Our team manages the lodgement of your visa application and maintains ongoing communication with the Department until a final decision is issued.

There are two primary streams under the Skilled Independent visa category:

Points Tested Stream:
This stream does not require sponsorship or nomination. However, applicants must receive an invitation to apply. Invitations are issued to candidates who meet or exceed the required points threshold for the Subclass 189 visa. In most cases, a minimum of 65 points is required to be eligible.

New Zealand Stream:
This stream is available to New Zealand citizens who have resided in Australia for at least five years and who hold, or have held, a Special Category visa (Subclass 444). To meet the residency eligibility requirement, applicants must have been residing in Australia on or before 19 February 2016.

Skilled Independent Visa (Australia) – Eligibility Criteria Subclass 189 Visa – Application Process

Applicants may be eligible under the Points Tested Stream if they have received an invitation to apply for the visa, are under 45 years of age at the time of invitation, hold a positive skills assessment in a relevant occupation, and achieve a minimum of 65 points on the applicable points test.

Eligibility under the New Zealand Stream requires that the applicant holds a Special Category visa (Subclass 444), has resided in Australia for a minimum of five years, and has met or exceeded the prescribed income threshold during the relevant assessment period.

To apply for a Subclass 189 visa under the Points Tested Stream, applicants must first submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect. Upon completion of the EOI, the system automatically calculates the applicant’s points based on their qualifications, skills, and other relevant factors. A minimum of 65 points is generally required to be considered eligible. Candidates who meet the threshold may receive an invitation to apply for the visa. Once an invitation is issued, the applicant must lodge the visa application through their ImmiAccount by selecting the β€œapply for visa” option within SkillSelect, which redirects to the ImmiAccount portal for submission.

For applicants under the New Zealand Stream, submission of an Expression of Interest and receipt of an invitation are not required. Eligible applicants may proceed directly to lodging their visa application through their ImmiAccount.
