Australia Work Visa
The type of Australian visa you apply for depends on the purpose of your visit, whether for tourism, business, employment, study, or visiting family. Nationals of many countries may lodge applications online, while others may be required to submit a paper application through an Australian Embassy or Consulate.
Australia Work Visa β Overview
Australia offers a structured and regulated migration framework for skilled workers, employers, and temporary staff. The Australian work visa system is designed to address labour market shortages, attract global talent, and support economic growth. Work visas may be temporary or permanent, employer sponsored or points tested, depending on the applicantβs qualifications, occupation, and employment arrangements.
Common work visa pathways include employer sponsored visas, skilled migration visas, regional work visas, and temporary skill shortage visas. Each visa subclass has specific eligibility criteria, documentation requirements, and conditions.
Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (Subclass 482) β Eligibility Criteria
The Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (Subclass 482) allows Australian employers to sponsor overseas workers to fill positions where suitably skilled Australian workers are not available. This visa replaced the former Subclass 457 visa and operates under strict regulatory guidelines.
To qualify for the Subclass 482 visa, applicants must be nominated by an approved Australian sponsor for an occupation listed on the relevant skilled occupation list. The employer must demonstrate that the position is genuine and that labour market testing has been conducted where required.
Applicants must possess the necessary skills, qualifications, and work experience relevant to the nominated occupation. In most cases, at least two years of relevant full time work experience is required. English language proficiency must be demonstrated through an approved English test unless exemptions apply. Applicants must also satisfy health and character requirements.
There are generally three streams under the Subclass 482 visa:
Short Term Stream, typically valid for up to two years
Medium Term Stream, generally valid for up to four years and may provide a pathway to permanent residence
Labour Agreement Stream, for employers operating under a labour agreement with the Australian Government.
Applicants must provide a clear colored copy of their passport bio-data page. Where applicable, official evidence of any name change must be included. The nomination approval from the sponsoring employer must be confirmed before visa grant. Applicants must provide employment references outlining job duties, duration of employment, and working hours to demonstrate relevant work experience.
Educational qualifications such as degrees, diplomas, and trade certificates must be submitted. Where required, a positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority must be provided. English language test results from an approved provider must be included unless exempt. The results must meet the minimum score requirements applicable to the chosen stream.
Health examinations may be required depending on the applicantβs country of residence and intended length of stay. Applicants aged 16 years or older must provide police clearance certificates for each country in which they have lived for 12 months or more during the past 10 years. If including family members, additional documents such as marriage certificates, birth certificates, and proof of relationship must be submitted. Evidence of adequate health insurance coverage is also required, as Subclass 482 visa holders must maintain health insurance while in Australia.
For applicants who are not sponsored by an employer but possess in demand skills, the Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) provides a permanent residence pathway. This visa operates under a points tested system. Applicants must submit an Expression of Interest through the SkillSelect system and receive an invitation to apply. Points are awarded based on age, English proficiency, skilled employment experience, educational qualifications, and other relevant factors.
Applicants must nominate an occupation listed on the Medium and Long Term Strategic Skills List and obtain a positive skills assessment from the designated assessing authority. Health, character, and English requirements must be met. Successful applicants receive permanent residence, allowing them to live and work anywhere in Australia.
The Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186) allows skilled workers nominated by an Australian employer to obtain permanent residence.
This visa has three streams:
- Temporary Residence
- Transition stream
- Direct Entry stream
- Labour Agreement stream
Eligibility criteria vary depending on the stream. Generally, applicants must have relevant skills and qualifications, meet English language requirements, and satisfy health and character standards.
Regional Work Visas
Australia encourages skilled migration to regional areas through specific visa pathways. Regional employer sponsored and points tested visas provide opportunities for applicants willing to live and work outside major metropolitan centers. Regional visas often offer priority processing and additional points under the points tested system.
General Requirements for Australia Work Visas
While each visa subclass has distinct criteria, the following requirements commonly apply:
- Nomination of an eligible occupation
- Relevant qualifications and work experience
- English language proficiency
- Health examinations
- Police clearance certificates
- Compliance with Australian immigration laws
Applicants must provide accurate and consistent documentation. False or misleading information can result in refusal and potential exclusion periods.
English Language Requirements
English proficiency is generally assessed through approved tests such as IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, or equivalent. Minimum score requirements vary by visa subclass and stream.
Exemptions may apply to passport holders from the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, United States, Canada, and New Zealand.
Health and Character Requirements
Applicants must meet Australiaβs health standards to ensure they do not pose a public health risk or place excessive demand on public services. Medical examinations must be conducted by approved panel physicians. Police clearance certificates are required for applicants aged 16 years or older. Form 80 and Form 1221 may be requested for character assessment in certain cases.
How to Apply for an Australia Work Visa
Most Australian work visa applications are lodged online through the Department of Home Affairs ImmiAccount system. Applicants must create an account, complete the relevant application form, upload supporting documents, and pay the prescribed visa application charge. For employer sponsored visas, the sponsoring employer must first lodge a nomination application. Once the nomination is approved or lodged, the applicant may proceed with the visa application.
Applicants must be outside or inside Australia at the time of application depending on the specific visa conditions. Visa grant conditions also vary, and applicants must review all conditions carefully. Processing times vary depending on the visa subclass, completeness of documentation, and individual circumstances. The Department may make a decision based solely on the information provided at lodgment, so applicants are strongly advised to submit complete documentation.
